Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness 


Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness is a green space in Oklahoma City, and it’s one of the best places to get outside and enjoy nature. Spanning over 3200 acres, Turkey Mountain features a variety of trails for both hikers and mountain bikers. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the area on foot while mountain bikers will be able to experience some steep climbs that have been designated as part of the “Urban Off-Road Bicycle Trails” system. With more than 15 miles of trails, there’s no shortage of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Whether you’re looking to hike or bike, Turkey Mountain has something that will appeal to all types of nature lovers. 

The mountain is split up into five different sections that are all different from the last. There’s Turkey Mountain proper, Dogwood Trails, Ironwood Trails, and East Rim trails along with a fifth section known as “The Preserve.” Each of these sections features its characteristics and mixtures of terrain so no matter where you start on your adventure it will be unique to that part of the mountain. 


Dogwood Trails 

Dogwood Trails is a mixture of single and double track trails that are more beginner-friendly. This area also has the most access to parking along with restrooms and water fountains. The terrain here varies from steep climbs to lower areas where you’ll find streams running through it. For those who have never mountain biked before, this might be a good section to explore first before moving on the more advanced trails of Turkey Mountain. 

Ironwood Trails 

Ironwood Trails is a single-track trail that’s open only to hikers. This part of the mountain has a lot of rock formations and can be very steep at certain points so it might not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for something adventurous this could be the trail for you. With over eight miles of trails, there’s plenty to explore here and it might be a good idea to bring some climbing gear if you’re looking to venture off the beaten path. 

The Preserve 

The Preserve has three different sections that are all open only to hikers; this includes The West Rim Trail which is an out-and-back trail that’s three miles long. Located at the top of The Preserve, this trail offers beautiful views and a steep climb so it might be best to save your energy before reaching the summit. 

East Rim Trail 


East Rim Trail is an out-and-back trail system with five different trails covering over 21 miles worth of terrain. This section includes Dogwood Trails so you’ll have easy access to the amenities, but because there are so many trails here it might be a good idea to bring some water and snacks with you. 

Turkey Mountain has something for everyone regardless of whether or not you’re looking for an intense workout or just want to enjoy nature’s beauty on your terms.
